Why should I get a website? An honest answer for local businesses

An honest starting point: plenty of good businesses survive without a website. If you're a plasterer with a six-month waiting list, nobody is going to pretend your world ends tomorrow because you're not online.

But "surviving without one" and "not losing anything without one" are different claims. The second one is almost never true any more, and it comes down to one habit nearly every customer now has.

Word of mouth hasn't died. It has moved.

Word of mouth is still how most local businesses grow; that hasn't changed. What has changed is what happens next. Someone tells their friend about your salon, and the friend doesn't simply turn up. They pull out their phone and Google you first.

At that moment, one of three things happens:

  • They find a proper website: your prices, your photos, your opening hours, a way to book. The recommendation is confirmed. They book.
  • They find nothing, or a Facebook page last updated two Christmases ago. Doubt creeps in. Are they still open? Is this the right place?
  • They find your competitor, who does have a website, sitting right there in the same search results. The recommendation you earned just converted for someone else.

A website doesn't replace word of mouth. It catches it. Every recommendation you've ever earned ends with someone looking at a screen, and the screen either closes the deal or loses it.

"But I've got Facebook and Instagram"

Social media is genuinely useful, and you should keep it. It does have one serious limitation: you don't own any of it.

The platform decides who sees your posts, and that number has been shrinking for years. Accounts get hacked, locked and occasionally deleted by mistake, and getting a human at Meta to fix it is somewhere between difficult and impossible. Your follower list isn't yours to take anywhere; it lives on their servers, under their rules.

A website with your own domain is the one piece of your online presence you actually own. Social media is renting a stall in someone else's market. A website is the freehold.

It works the hours you don't

Ask any salon owner when clients try to book, and the honest answer is: at half ten at night, on the sofa, phone in hand. A tradesperson gets quote requests while they're up a ladder. A takeaway gets "are you open bank holiday Monday?" fifty times a week.

A website answers all of it while you're asleep, on the tools or mid-service. Booking links, price lists, menus, opening hours, and that one question about parking you've answered a thousand times. Set it down once and it works every hour you're closed.

It proves you're real

People are more careful online than they used to be, and rightly so. A proper website, with your real address, your real work, the padlock in the browser bar and an email that's you@yourbusiness.co.uk rather than a personal address from 2009, quietly answers the question every new customer is silently asking: is this business legitimate, current and worth my money?

And it's how Google finds you

When someone searches "electrician in Stockport" or "nail salon near me", Google recommends businesses it knows about and trusts. Without a website, you've given it very little to work with. A Google Business Profile on its own helps, but it works far better alongside a proper site. (We've written a plain-English guide to how this works: What is SEO?)

What it doesn't need to be

The reassuring part is what a website doesn't need to be. Most local businesses don't need a thirty-page website or a five-thousand-pound upfront project. They need about five pages done properly: who you are, what you do, what it costs, proof you're good at it, and an easy way to get in touch. Fast, correct on a phone, and findable on Google.

That's a much smaller, much more affordable thing than most people fear. It's also exactly what we build.
